On 1 November 1981 the law firms of Azman
& Co. and the Ipoh office of Lewis & Co. merged to form Azman, Davidson
& Co. in Ipoh, Perak. The firm of Lewis & Co. was named after its original
senior partner, Mr. JMM Lewis, who had practised in Ipoh from the year
1930 to the year 1978 except during the Second World War. The practice
of Lewis & Co. revolved largely around the tin mining industry, then the
backbone of the Malayan economy. The firm represented all the major participants
in the mining industry.
Immediately after the merger, Azman, Davidson & Co. established a branch office in
Kuala Lumpur. The Ipoh and Kuala Lumpur branches of the firm went their separate ways in
1995. The present firm of Azman, Davidson & Co. grew out of this branch
in Kuala Lumpur.
From small beginnings as a branch, and an outfit of one full-time lawyer,
the firm of Azman, Davidson & Co. in Kuala Lumpur has grown to a full
service firm of 13 partners, 17 associates and 50 support staff.
Mr. W.S.W. Davidson, associated with Lewis & Co. since 1970,
became joint senior partner of Azman, Davidson & Co. with the merger in
1981. In June 1985, the present managing partner, Mr. Francis Tan joined the
firm. Although Mr. W.S.W. Davidson retired from the partnership in 2000, he is currently
a full time consultant with the firm.
Azman, Davidson & Co. currently has practitioners in various branches
of the law and has matured into a full service firm with a full range
of corporate and commercial legal services sought after by companies, financial
institutions, non-profit and statutory organisations, as well as individuals.
